Help needed!

Postby pc1000 on Sat Jan 10, 2009 11:38 pm

Hi everyone,
It seems like that I should not try police career. English is my 2cd language, so WCT is little hard for me. I like jogging, but need to do more intense cardio exercise and put some muscle on in order to pass the PREP. Also my vision is not good as 20/20. I don't have any volunteer hours yet. But I registered with TRP 2 weeks ago, want to have a try.
So please anyone give me some ideas where to start. By the way I am in Toronto area.
Thanks!

Hey There welcome! As far as volunteer hours go , get started right away. It takes a while for the reference check and interviews the organizations may want to have with you. Try your local public library. They will have a One on One English Speaking Mentoring program. I am involved in one, and it is working with newcomers to Canada. It is a great experience and will help you grow as an individual and looks good on a Resume! The Red Cross has a Disaster Management Program that is good as well. Children's Aid is another good one too! You should realize that you may not be hired right away and it may take more than a year before the law enforcement agency finds you an attractive applicant and grants you an interview. Get going right away on the process..i did about 4 months ago and will apply for an interview in April. Good luck and take care.

hey there pc1000,

Don't let your language stop you from becoming a police officer there are looking for minorities. I am Laotioan and english is my second language too, i just received my oacp certificate last month but i have not applied yet. Just getting everything together right now, it's never to late to start your volunteer work i just started in October with the big brothers organization. As for the prep if you are active you'll have no problem with it, go to the gym daily, exercise right and you should be good. If you have a dream follow it don't let anything come in your way, life is like an obstacle course there are many obstacle that you must conquer and this is one of them, but if set your mind to it you will have no problem. Just study the material on this site, and if you go on the internet you will find some helpful stuff too. As for your sight if you wear glasses you should be alright, i had lasik eye surgery so my vision was 20/20 but i have seen people with glasses who are police officer. I hope that your hearing is fine also for the hearing test, because i have heard of people failing that by a few decibels. So i wish you all the best and hope that you reach your goal. As for me this is just the beginning of another long process...................

Hey there pc1000 :D

Well the good thing I can hear from all of this is that you have identified your weaknesses and sounds like you are on your way towards trying to improve on them.
Test ready pro is an amazing program so keep taking those PATI tests and in no time you will see your test scores climb.

You should defiantly not give up policing as a career a lot of police forces are looking for minorities. I happened to be looking on the Brantford Police Service’s website a couple of weeks ago and it had mentioned that they strongly encouraging women and members of minority groups to apply. (Reference) http://www.police.brantford.on.ca/recruit.html check the website out!!!!

Many Police Services are looking for individuals of minority at this point.

Now volunteering is very important to becoming a Police Constable. Police Services are essentially looking for a commitment to the community. You have to have an understanding of what’s happening around you. You need to understand the need in your community. Get to know where the nearest shelters are in your community. Get to know where the nearest food banks are. After all you will be working in partnership with your community!! Get started volunteering at the closest shelter to you. Shelters are always in need for volunteers. Not only is it helping your community hours but you are helping people in NEED.

The Toronto Public Library hosts E.S.L. classes. This would be an excellent opportunity for you. Here is the web site. http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/mul_ ... ingual.jsp.

Google can be a great friend when trying to find information on courses or programs. For example this website came up when I typed in English courses Toronto area:

http://www.vec.ca/english/1/english-toronto.cfm

Check some of them out!!!!!

Jogging is a good way to get your heart rate up but like you said yourself you need to intensify your workout. I can’t personally tell you what to do fitness wise because I am not qualified to give you that information. My best suggestion to you is ask a personal trainer or find a one on one mentor. Once you do that you will have no problem with your fitness.

Also keep in mind many Police Stations offer recruitment nights. Check out their websites for the next available times to go. This is a free session. After the session is over they give you time to speak to a recruiting officer one on one. These information sessions will tell you everything you need to know. Many services also have free fitness nights you can go to where they will show you what needs to be done to reach the fitness standards.

Take advantage of this!!!!!

Any who…. I don’t want to be too long winded, but keep pushing ahead.

Remember you can do anything you put your mind to.

PM me sometime and let me know about your process

Your friend Mandi

Dear my friends-Beck, Mandi, Badboy and others who have read my post,
I am very grateful for all your great help! You guys are wonderful. Now I know I came to the right place to ask for help.
Beck, I admire you to become a big brother, since my son and I had to wait for more than 3 years to get a big brother for him. They met last October, now they are best friends.
I definately will try my best to pursue my career of dream. Your advice is great. I will become a member of Goodlife Gym as soon as I have my lasik surgery done. They have a program which will for sure help me with PREP test. I also will contact these organizations, get my volunteer job started asap.

Is the real WCT test similar to the training material level 2?
I had more than 10 years of military experience in China, but did not mention it when I applied immigration because of some concerns then. Can anyone please tell me if this will be a big problem?

Best regards.

Hello again :D
Just to note............................. :D
I have heard from the Test Ready Pro seminars at Mohawk College that the Written Communication Test’s on Test Ready Pro are very close if not a little bit harder than the WCT’S used at ATS.
Another reason why Test Ready Pro is unbelievably amazing. I think it is one of the best comprehensive recruitment preparation programs available.
TRP prepare's you for real life. :D

Hi Beck, Mandi,
Thanks for reply. I will apply for Toronto Police. James Wong is my Recruiting officer. I have told him about my problem. He asked me if I were a citizen or PR. I am a citizen. Then he asked me to try. He even called me in October 2008, said they were still hiring for December. So I don't really understand what is in his mind.
I am happy to find TRP, and get help from great people like you. Please don't feel bothered by me if I ask more questions.
Take care!
